From the middle of the 1800s until the 1920s, wine was grown in Victoria’s Yarra Valley and was a major export of the new colony.
Due to the economic conditions of the time, changes in consumer preferences, and the high price of wool, wine production by the wineries in the Yarra Valley ceased in the 1920s.
The Yarra Valley would require a visionary to restore winemaking, and in 1969 Dr. Bailey Carrodus met all the requirements to become a superb vigneron.
Dr. Carrodus set off on a research tour of the top vineyards and wineries in France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy after being moved by the elegance and refinement of the wines he tasted while studying at Oxford.
After that, he accepted a position at Melbourne University and started looking for a vineyard location where he could make the kind of wine he had come to adore. His inquiry led him to the Yarra Valley in Victoria.
In 1973, he made his first vintage of Dry Red Wine No.2, a northern Rhone blend, under the name Yarra Yering. The vineyard would eventually rank among the greatest in the Yarra Valley.
For the following 35 years, Dr. Carrodus produced his wines to great critical and financial success. Yarra Yering soon established an international name for excellence and uniqueness.
2017 vintage experienced some tricky growing conditions, but was saved by perfect autumn ripening weather and ended up a super year!
Wine’s structure was enhanced by adding some stalks to the fermenters. A portion of Marsanne skins and frozen Viognier grape skins were placed in as well adding a bit of body and beatiful roundness to the final product. The wine was then aged in the French oak barrels with a proportion of new oak.
Yarra Yering Dry Red N2 expresses plum and savoury spice flavours, as well as violets and bramble, with finishes of cigar box and cardamom. It’s truly a multi-layered wine with both sweet and savoury elements.
