Kumeu River is considered one of the best producers of Chardonnay in New Zealand.
Mate’s Vineyard bottle is named after Maté Brajkovich, one of the sons of the original landowners. In 1990 Maté planted new Chardonnay – the grapes from these vines were harvested one year after his death, in 1993. And in 1994, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the family’s life on the Kumeu River, the wines were released for sale.
Kumeu River Mate’s Vineyard Chardonnay 2024 Vintage:
The 2024 vintage from Mate’s Vineyard continues the remarkable legacy of this 35-year-old site, once again delivering exceptional quality. As the final vineyard harvested in 2024, the low-yielding fruit was picked under perfect conditions and arrived in immaculate shape. The resulting wine displays the hallmark density, concentration, and length that define outstanding Mate’s vintages, enhanced this year by a particularly crisp lemon acidity. While still reserved aromatically in its youth, with time in bottle it will unfold gracefully, revealing the full spectrum of complex aromas and seductive depth that make this wine so distinctive.
Food pairing suggestion: Roast pork tenderloin with maple rosemary glaze.
Did you know? Maté and his wife Melba, also of Croatian descent, had four children, all of whom are now involved in the winemaking for the estates. Whilst young, they were brought up around the winery, gaining the skills and knowledge that would help them take the winery to next level of success in the coming years.
