Orin Swift takes some of the best vineyard selections to make visually stunning Napa Valley wines.
The Abstract is the definition of complexity through geographic diversification. Like the label, the wine is made up of a variety of various components. Fruit is obtained from numerous vineyards, in various appellations around the state in order to develop a style and preserve consistency every year.
The wine starts out with more than 200 components, which are then reduced over the course of several months during numerous marathon tastings. Not all of them make the blend but the outcome is a wine that embodies the Golden State.
Orin Swift ‘Abstract’ 2020 Vintage:
The 2020 Abstract presents a vivid neon-purple hue with a deep maroon core, introducing dark, inviting aromatics. Black plum, boysenberry, and hints of Bing cherry and lavender draw you in, transitioning seamlessly to the palate with the addition of dark chocolate and concentrated blackberry. Smooth, drying tannins and a subtle chalky texture lend structure, concluding in a calming, lingering finish.
Robert Parker – 91/100 points
Orin Swift ‘Abstract’ 2022 Vintage:
The 2022 Abstract pours an opaque purple core framed by a glowing mauve rim. Aromas open with muddled blue and blackberries, layered with dark chocolate brownie and seasoned leather. The palate is polished and plush on entry, revealing ripe plum, boysenberry, and savoury notes reminiscent of Santa Maria tri-tip. Grippy, chewy tannins provide structure through the finish, which lingers with hints of sarsaparilla and blackcurrant.
Orin Swift ‘Abstract’ food pairing suggestion:
Braised beef.
Did you know? The label for Abstract took over three years to put together. Much like the wine itself, it has numerous components: the 230 photographs that make up Abstract were cut out from magazines that Phinney purchased while travelling from airport shops. Phinney was inspired by an Italian designer’s collage that was taped up in his living room and believed, rightfully so, his own design would create a striking wine label. It ended up being a sizable collection of portraits, including The Queen, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and many others.

Sophia Johnson –
Love this wine for its tannins and leathery notes. The bottle is a bit heavy though!
George Thomas –
The best wine from Orin Swift vineyard in my opinion. Consistent every time, never fails to impress. Super smooth and well balanced. Cherry and vanilla on the nose, blackberry, plum and oak on the taste. Good idea to let it breath before drinking as it brings out the sweetness. Enjoy!

Slowly working my way through all the orin swift wines, yet to be disappointed! Firstly, and most importantly, stunning red with a nose of blackberries, oak, vanilla, cloves, tobacco and cinnamon. More blackberries and oak on the palate with hints of plums and cherries. Very full bodied with complex flavours that keep coming.
Secondly, the label on this bottle is awesome.
