Haras de Pirque Ecral is a premium red blend from Chile’s Maipo Valley, showcasing the elegance and depth achievable in the region’s top-tier wines. Named “Ecral” as an homage to racehorses and the estate’s equestrian roots, this wine reflects finesse, power, and a refined sense of balance.
Haras de Pirque Ecral, The Producer
Haras de Pirque is a striking estate in the heart of the Maipo Andes, jointly owned by the Antinori family of Tuscany – renowned for their centuries-old winemaking legacy. The estate combines world-class viticulture with a passion for horses, as seen in its distinctive horseshoe-shaped winery. Since joining forces with the Antinoris in the early 2000s, Haras de Pirque has become known for crafting elegant wines that fuse Old World sensibilities with Chile’s unique terroir. Ecral stands as a symbol of this philosophy – crafted with precision and a deep respect for the land.
Haras de Pirque Ecral, Terroir & Winemaking
The vineyards are nestled at the foot of the Andes, benefiting from stony alluvial soils, intense sunlight, and cooling mountain breezes. These natural elements result in wines of vibrant acidity, fine tannins, and notable aromatic complexity. Grapes for Ecral come entirely from certified organic vineyards in Pirque, where they are carefully selected and hand-harvested. The blend – dominated by Carmenere but some vintages can be up to 100% Carmenere – is fermented in stainless steel and aged in small new French oak barriques from 12 months to enhance structure and depth without overpowering the fruit character, followed by another yer of bottle age.
Haras de Pirque Ecral, Tasting Notes
Ecral is deep ruby in colour with a bouquet of blackcurrant, violet, cedar, and spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet refined, offering layers of ripe dark fruit, tobacco, and savoury earthiness. The tannins are silky, leading to a long, elegant finish.
Food pairing suggestion: Spicy empanadas.
