Sevilen Nativus Boğazkere Öküzgözü, Producer
Founded in 1942 by Bulgarian immigrant Isa Güner, Sevilen began with just four hectares of vineyards in Izmir. His belief in Turkey’s potential for fine wine production inspired the name “Sevilen,” meaning “beloved.” Under the guidance of his sons and now the third generation, the winery has expanded to over 160 hectares, establishing itself as one of Turkey’s most ambitious and respected premium wine producers.
Sevilen Nativus Boğazkere Öküzgözü, Terroir & Winemaking
Sourced from vineyards in Güney, Denizli, at altitudes exceeding 900 metres above sea level, the 20–25-year-old unirrigated vines grow in a mix of clay and limestone soils. Grapes are hand-harvested to ensure quality. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, with ten days’ skin maceration for optimal colour and flavour extraction. Post-fermentation, 10% of the wine is aged for six months in 400-litre, medium-toast French oak barrels, adding subtle spice and texture.
Sevilen Nativus Boğazkere Öküzgözü, Tasting Notes
Öküzgözü contributes vibrant, juicy red berry flavours, while Boğazkere brings darker fruit tones, firm tannins, and notes of liquorice and black pepper. The palate is bold and fruit-forward, yet retains freshness and poise, finishing long, harmonious, and satisfying.
Did you know?
Boğazkere’s name translates to “throat burner” in Turkish — a nod to its naturally firm tannins, which are perfectly balanced here by the softer, juicier profile of Öküzgözü.
