Powerhouse red from the brilliant Orin Swift label. The wine was created by legendary winemaker Dave Phinney who seems to make a success out of everything he touches! Dave was the man behind the famous Prisoner brand, which was sold to US wine behemoth E.J Gallo in 2016 in a deal worth around $300 million. The Orin Swift wines all share a common trait of the huge intensity of fruit and very beguiling textures.
If you have enjoyed Napa Cabernet Sauvignon in the past the power and intensity of this wine will be familiar, but the clever move of using a blend of grapes rather than just the very expensive Cabernet Sauvignon grapes means that the wine costs can be more tightly controlled, leading to a great deal of wine for the price.
The blend of this wine comprises Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Grenache and is aged for 11 months in 30% new French oak. The wine absolutely bursts out of the glass with black plum, dark chocolate, and berry compote notes. This is layered, weighty, and unashamedly bold. 15.7% ABV.
Orin Swift ‘Machete’ food pairing ideas: Machete makes a great match for chargrilled red meats, and even stands up to sticky ribs.

I’m a HUGE fan of orin swift machete. For me it’s the perfect balance of boldness and smoothness. Was recommended to open early and let it breathe, glad I did. Went SO well with lamb. Flavours of blackberry, plumb, tobacco and a hint of vanilla. Definitely one of my go to wines when I have something special planned…
