FMC 2007 is now a piece of South African wine history: a mature, deeply expressive Chenin Blanc from the vintage that marked the early crescendo of FMC’s global reputation. After nearly two decades, this wine has transformed from opulent and powerful to intricate, savoury and hypnotically layered. It’s rich, golden, honeyed and endlessly complex; a reminder that world-class Chenin can age with the majesty of great white Burgundy or Savennières.
Ken Forrester, The Producer
Ken Forrester’s dedication to Chenin Blanc borders on spiritual. Long before “fine South African Chenin” became part of the wine vocabulary, Ken was proving what could be achieved with the right sites, the right yields and the right philosophy. FMC (originally jokingly named “F*cking Marvellous Chenin”) remains his defining masterpiece. Instead of chasing trends, Ken followed a simple rule: grow the best possible grapes, interfere as little as possible, and let Chenin’s natural opulence speak. The 2007 vintage is a testament to that belief: a wine that was extraordinary in youth and astonishing in maturity.
About the 2007 Vintage
Time has sculpted this vintage into something remarkable. Expect layers of baked quince, dried apricot, orange oil, toasted almond, saffron and beeswax. The acidity remains vibrant, giving the wine focus and drive despite its richness. The texture is luxurious, almost oily, yet perfectly balanced by savoury notes of chamomile, lanolin and warm stone. It’s drinking beautifully now, but still has years of life ahead, a true collector’s vintage.
Food Pairing Suggestion
Ideal with roasted guinea fowl, miso-glazed cod, or creamy wild mushroom risotto.
Did you know?
This was one of the first FMC vintages to be widely collected outside South Africa, many sommeliers still cite 2007 as their “conversion vintage”.
