Maison Roche de Bellene Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Producer
Maison Roche de Bellene is the négociant arm of Nicolas Potel, one of Burgundy’s most influential winemakers and a lifelong advocate for purity, honesty and old-vine expression. After growing up in Volnay and learning from some of the region’s greatest domaines, Potel set out to create a house that champions classic Burgundy at every level. Roche de Bellene focuses exclusively on sustainably farmed, old-vine parcels sourced from trusted growers across the Côte d’Or. Potel’s approach is always minimalist: indigenous yeasts, gentle extraction, careful élevage and an unwavering commitment to letting terroir speak for itself. His Bourgogne Pinot Noir is crafted to be an authentic introduction to the red wines of Burgundy: refined, expressive and unmistakably Pinot.
Maison Roche de Bellene Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Terroir & Winemaking
The fruit is drawn from selected plots across the Côte de Beaune and, in some vintages, the Hautes-Côtes, where limestone-rich soils and cooler exposures give Pinot Noir its hallmark lift and precision. Vines are generally 35–60 years old, forest unusually mature for a regional wine — resulting in naturally low yields and impressive concentration. Grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented with native yeasts. Potel favours a gentle extraction regime to avoid harsh tannins, preferring long, slow ferments that preserve aromatic purity. Ageing takes place in a mix of stainless steel and seasoned French oak barrels, with only a touch of oak influence, just enough to round the edges without muting the fruit.
Maison Roche de Bellene Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Tasting Notes
Maison Roche de Bellene Bourgogne Pinot Noir is bright, aromatic and beautifully Burgundian. The nose shows red cherry, wild strawberry and cranberry, lifted by notes of rose petal, soft spice and a hint of forest floor. The palate is elegant and finely textured, offering ripe red berry fruit, subtle earthy undertones and a delicate mineral thread. Silky tannins and lively acidity carry through to a clean, gently savoury finish. It is both approachable and quietly complex: an excellent example of how well-made regional Burgundy should taste.
Food Pairing Suggestion
Perfect with roast duck, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, or a simple plate of charcuterie.
Did You Know?
Even for his entry-level wines, Nicolas Potel works only with growers who farm old vines (a rarity in Burgundy) allowing his Bourgogne reds to overdeliver on depth and finesse.
