The vineyards are situated on some of the most stunning terroir South Africa has to offer and are nestled on this commanding hill beneath the towering Babylons Toren mountain range. It is a region where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive naturally, producing wines of extraordinary delicacy, balance, and depth that can confidently compete on a global scale. According to the winemaker and owner Kevin Grant, the word “ataraxia” is used to indicate emotional calmness. His method of winemaking is non-interventionist and simple, with a focus on expressing terroir and a feeling of location.
This vin de terroir, produced from the first harvest of organic grapes cultivated on Ataraxia, is the result of a five-year conversion process to organic principles. It is a part of the producer’s continual effort to understand the essence of our region.
Traditional Burgundian winemaking methods, such as a protracted pre-fermentation cold soak and spontaneous fermentation without additions, followed by ageing in carefully chosen French oak barrels obtained only from Burgundian coopers, were all parts of a gentle, minimal, non-interventionist winemaking approach. The resulting wine represents the region in the most genuine way possible.
Food pairing suggestion: Guinea fowl with Jerusalem artichokes.
