Bertani winery was established in 1867 by brothers Giovan Battista Gaetano Bertani. By 1880 their wines have been exported worldwide. For over 150 years, they have crafted wines that are distinct in their identity, characterised by a clear and unmistakable stylistic profile. They have consistently opted for wines that reflect their region, even when guided by method.

For them, tradition is a deliberate choice, shaped by research, evaluation, courage, and a deep respect for nature. Maintaining a mission for over a century involves honouring past achievements while continuously re-evaluating and refining them. This approach ensures that Bertani wines consistently deliver quality that reflects their potential and reputation.

The pinnacle of excellence is epitomised by Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, which in the 2015 vintage fully showcases its identity as a premier red wine and a hallmark of Made in Italy. This 2015 vintage builds on the success of the Amarone Classico Bertani 2013, which was the most awarded wine in Italy last year.

Bertani Amarone Classico 2015 Vineyards

Renowned as one of Italy’s most prestigious vineyard regions, the Veronese area is a diverse territory with a rich enological history. Today, it proudly hosts the largest number of DOC wines on the Italian peninsula. Bertani has long had faith in the distinctiveness of the Veronese territories, from Valpolicella Classica to Valpantena, and from Soave to Lugana. Their approach, which has been consistently respectful both in the vineyard and the cellar, has evolved over the decades to develop a style that remains current without ever compromising on quality.

Bertani Amarone Classico 2015 Winemaking

Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a quintessential representation of the denomination, embodying tradition, terroir, and rural craftsmanship. Composed of 80% Corvina Veronese and 20% Rondinella, the grapes are left to rest in a traditional drying room without artificial temperature or humidity control, with the drying period on the “aréle” lasting 78 days. Following this, the wine matures for 7 years in 50-100 hectoliter Slavonian oak barrels. It then undergoes approximately 1 year of bottle ageing. The result is a wine of considerable richness and complexity, offering depth in both its aromas and palate, where the alcohol harmonises perfectly with the wine’s acidity and refined tannins.

2015 was a hot and dry summer that resulted in an early harvest. The rainfall was followed by several dry weeks leading to great flavour concentration in the grapes.

Bertani Amarone Classico 2015 Tasting Notes

Nick Jackson, Master of Wine, (curator the volume The Library of Bertani):

‘The nose is very expressive and complex, with distinct floral (violet/crocus) and cedar top notes, underpinned by darker, more brawny, earthy and tar tones. On the palate, there is substantial weight, but no heaviness thanks to the lively acidity. The generous, seamlessly textured fruit coats the tannins. Red fruit notes of remarkable purity are followed by a rich mouthful of great liquorice dimension, and a meaty, savoury finish. This is a brooding wine, with a reservoir of savoury, smoky depths, accessible now thanks to the supple tannins and sensual expressivity, but with decades of glorious evolution to come’

Bertani Amarone Classico 2015 Awards

James Suckling – 100/100

‘Bertani has arguably created the genre of Amarone, and their Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2015 may be viewed in the same light as the great Amarones of Bertani from 1930s and 1940s.’
