Bruce Jack Off the Charts Viognier (also known as “Tumbleweed” or “Sundance”) is a delightfully fragrant and juicy white from Swartland. It flaunts ripe peach and apricot aromas balanced by crisp zest, making it both vivid and soulfully expressive.
Producer
Bruce Jack Wines is a vibrant, small-producer powerhouse in the Western Cape, driven by winemakers Bruce Jack and Marlize Beyers, whose partnership spans over twenty years. They founded the Off the Charts label to celebrate Swartland’s raw, untamed character—and in fact, the wines embrace the region’s cultural roots and rugged landscapes . In 2023, this range was recognised as one of the World’s Most Admired Wine Brands, a nod to their balance of story, terroir, and quality.
Terroir & Winemaking
The Viognier grapes come from dryland vineyards across Swartland planted at between 60 and 300 m elevation on ancient sandstone and shale soils. With scorching summers and cooler, wetter winters, Swartland provides ideal stress conditions that coax intense fruit flavours while retaining freshness.
In the cellar, Bruce Jack uses only free-run juice, then cold ferments at low temperatures to preserve elegance. Approximately 47% is barrel-fermented and aged in neutral oak for four months, while the remaining 53% remains in stainless steel on fine lees to retain vibrancy.
Tasting Notes
Lift the glass to find a pale straw-gold wine bursting with peach blossom, apricot compote, and delicate floral tones. The palate delivers a luscious mouthfeel tempered by refreshing acidity, with layered stone fruit, a hint of creaminess, and soft orchard spice. It finishes bright and expressive—inviting another sip.
Food pairing suggestion:Â spicy Thai coconut soup or grilled peach salad with burrata.
