Albablu captures a wonderfully Mediterranean side of Vermentino, combining ripe citrus and fragrant flowers with the salty freshness that comes from vineyards close to the Tuscan coast. Grapefruit, lemon and green apple lead the way, followed by white blossom, subtle herbs and a hint of spice. The palate has more roundness than a very lean coastal white, but a strong mineral streak and lively acidity keep everything fresh and energetic. Brief ageing on the fine lees adds a gentle softness without taking away from the wine’s bright fruit. Produced in Bolgheri, an area far better known for powerful red wines, Albablu offers a completely different perspective on this celebrated Tuscan terroir: light, expressive and unmistakably influenced by the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea.
Campo alle Comete Albablu Vermentino, Producer
Campo alle Comete is a Tuscan estate based in Castagneto Carducci, in the heart of Bolgheri. It forms part of the Feudi di San Gregorio family of wineries and was created to bring the group’s focus on regional identity and indigenous varieties to one of Tuscany’s most prestigious wine-growing areas. Rather than simply reproducing the powerful Bordeaux-inspired reds for which Bolgheri is famous, Campo alle Comete explores a broader expression of the landscape, including Vermentino, which is the area’s most important white grape variety.
The estate also has a distinctive visual identity, inspired by storytelling and fantasy. Its labels and winery imagery draw on a dreamlike world created with celebrated illustrator Nicoletta Ceccoli, giving the wines an unusually playful appearance while the winemaking itself remains firmly rooted in Bolgheri’s terroir.
Campo alle Comete Albablu Vermentino, Terroir & Winemaking
Albablu comes from vineyards around Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci, where the proximity of the Tyrrhenian Sea has a major influence on the vines. Warm Tuscan sunshine allows Vermentino to develop ripe citrus and floral aromas, while regular maritime breezes moderate temperatures and help the grapes retain freshness.
The soils include significant sandy components alongside limestone, clay and stones. These free-draining conditions suit Vermentino particularly well and contribute to the savoury, mineral quality that defines the finished wine. White grape production accounts for only a relatively small proportion of Bolgheri’s vineyards, making Albablu a less familiar expression of this famous region.
The grapes are vinified entirely in stainless steel at a controlled temperature of around 15°C. After fermentation, the wine spends a short period on its fine lees to build softness and body without sacrificing freshness. No oak is used, and the finished wine receives a short period of bottle maturation before release.
Campo alle Comete Albablu Vermentino, Tasting Notes
Bright lemon-yellow in colour with delicate green reflections. The nose is aromatic and immediately appealing, with grapefruit, lemon and fresh green apple joined by white flowers and subtle Mediterranean herbs.
The palate is dry and medium-bodied, combining juicy citrus with a gently rounded texture. Grapefruit and lemon peel bring freshness, while a subtle floral and spicy quality adds complexity. There is a particularly attractive saline quality running through the wine, giving the finish a mouth-watering, mineral character.
Despite the warmth of the Tuscan coast, the wine remains beautifully balanced, with enough fruit and softness to feel generous but enough acidity and savouriness to keep it crisp and refreshing.
