A rich, full-bodied South African red with ripe black fruit, smoky spice, and smooth tannins, a modern classic from Paarl.
Fairview Paarl Pinotage, Producer
Fairview is one of South Africa’s most recognised and pioneering wine estates. Established in 1693, it has been in the hands of the Back family since 1937. Charles Back has built a reputation for innovation, championing Rhône varieties, sustainable farming, and fair trade practices. While Fairview is widely known for its playful “Goats do Roam” range, it also produces serious, terroir-driven wines that highlight South Africa’s unique grapes. Pinotage, the country’s signature variety, has long been a focus.
Fairview Paarl Pinotage, Terroir & Winemaking
The grapes come from vineyards in Paarl, planted on decomposed granite soils that give natural structure and concentration. Paarl’s warm Mediterranean climate ensures ripe fruit, while cooling breezes at night preserve acidity. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks with regular pump-overs to extract colour and tannin. After fermentation, the wine matures in a mix of French and American oak barrels for 12–14 months. This balance of vessels enhances texture and integrates Pinotage’s naturally bold flavours.
Fairview Paarl Pinotage, Tasting Notes
The nose is expressive with ripe blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with hints of coffee, smoke, and vanilla. The palate is full and generous, offering juicy black fruit and earthy spice. Firm yet polished tannins provide structure, while balanced acidity lifts the flavours. The finish is long and smooth, with lingering notes of dark chocolate and toasted oak.
