Hartenberg Shiraz: A Staff Favourite from Stellenbosch

Hartenberg Estate Shiraz is a personal favourite of nearly everyone in our team. Hartenberg are Shiraz experts, and it shows: peppery spice, big bold fruit and soft tannins, all in perfect balance. A real triumph.

Hartenberg is in the Bottelary Hills near Stellenbosch, set in its own enclosed valley. Grapes have been grown on the farm since 1692, making it one of South Africa’s historic wine estates. The Mackenzie family bought it in 1986, and the estate is now run by the family alongside long-serving winemaker Carl Schultz.

Shiraz is where Hartenberg really shines. The estate makes several Shiraz wines, including single-vineyard bottlings, and this Estate Shiraz is the perfect introduction to their style. Only French oak barrels are used in the cellar, adding subtle spice and polish without taking over the fruit.

Expect ripe blackberry and plum with lots of cracked black pepper and spice. The palate is full of bold fruit, with soft, rounded tannins and a long, savoury finish. It is generous and warming, but beautifully balanced.

Hartenberg Estate Shiraz Food Pairing Suggestion:

Try it with peppered steak, a rack of lamb, barbecued ribs or a South African-style braai. It is also excellent with venison, beef stew or a mature Cheddar.
