Jansz Tasmania Premium Cuvée NV: Tasmania’s Sparkling Star
Jansz Tasmania Premium Cuvée NV is a brilliant example of just how good Australian sparkling wine can be. Fresh, elegant and beautifully creamy, it combines bright cool-climate fruit with the richer, toasted complexity that comes from extended ageing on the lees. If you love traditional-method sparkling wine but fancy looking beyond Champagne, this is a particularly good place to start.
Jansz has been dedicated to sparkling wine in Tasmania since 1986, when Champagne house Louis Roederer recognised the potential of the island’s cool climate and helped establish Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines at Pipers River. Today, Jansz is one of Tasmania’s best-known sparkling wine producers, making wines that take full advantage of the island’s long, cool growing season and naturally vibrant acidity.
The Premium Cuvée brings together Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from selected cool-climate vineyards across Tasmania. Bottle fermentation and extended time on the lees add depth without overpowering the freshness of the fruit, giving the wine that lovely balance between crispness and creaminess for which Jansz has become so well regarded.
In the glass it is pale gold with a fine, persistent mousse. Aromas of citrus zest, honeysuckle and fresh strawberry sit alongside more savoury notes of nougat, roasted nuts and gentle toast. The palate is lively and refreshing, with lemon and citrus fruit, a soft creamy texture and beautifully judged acidity. It finishes dry, clean and fresh, with lingering citrus and nutty notes. Elegant enough for a celebration, but far too drinkable to save only for special occasions.
Jansz Tasmania Food Pairing Suggestion:
This is particularly good with seafood. Try it with freshly shucked oysters, fritto misto with lemon aioli or grilled garlic asparagus. Its combination of crisp acidity and creamy texture also makes it a lovely aperitif, especially with salty snacks or lighter starters.
