Jesús Madrazo hails from one of the founding families of Compania Vinicola del Norte de España (CVNE), a cornerstone of Spanish winemaking. His father, José Madrazo, co-founded Contino in 1973, pioneering it as the first single estate in Rioja. Continuing the family legacy, Jesús, a fifth-generation member of the CVNE founding family, joined the winemaking team in Haro in 1995. By 1999, he was promoted to Senior Winemaker at Contino, where he earned global recognition, particularly for his groundbreaking achievement of creating Spain’s first-ever 100% Graciano wine.
Jesús Madrazo shares his winemaking philosophy: “I’ve started to incorporate some Maturana into the blend, which adds a well-balanced tannic character and vibrant freshness. I’m also using a small amount of my friend Bárbara Palacios’s Merlot, which contributes a sweet tannin that harmonises with the warmth of Garnacha to balance the rusticity of Graciano. As a result, the wine is clean and bright, featuring an intense cherry colour. It boasts a powerful nose with red fruits, aromatic bush herbs, mint chocolate, and spicy notes of clove and cinnamon. On the palate, it is fresh, with intense fruit flavours and excellent acidity. The oak is well-integrated, providing a tight yet silky smooth finish. ”
Food pairing suggestion: Sicilian pork with chocolate sauce.
