Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard River Malbec is one of Argentina’s great terroir-driven Malbecs: powerful and deeply concentrated, yet defined as much by freshness, perfume and mineral tension as by richness. It comes from just 2.6 hectares of the extraordinary Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary, where vines grow at 1,366 metres above sea level on the remains of an ancient riverbed. The parcel is covered in smooth white stones coated with calcium carbonate, creating an environment that gives the wine its distinctive combination of dark fruit, floral perfume, chalky texture and almost saline minerality.
The 2020 is expressive but structured, opening with blackberry, black cherry and plum before revealing violet, herbs, pepper, liquorice and crushed-stone notes. Whole-cluster fermentation brings additional fragrance and savoury complexity, while extended ageing in French oak gives breadth without losing the vineyard’s natural freshness. There is real power here, but it is controlled: firm, finely textured tannins and vibrant acidity keep the wine precise and incredibly long. This is a serious, cellar-worthy Malbec that shows just how far removed the finest wines of Gualtallary are from the simple, plush style often associated with the grape.

Catena Zapata is one of the estates most closely associated with the transformation of Argentine wine. Founded in Mendoza in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena, the winery has remained in family ownership for more than a century. Its modern story is particularly linked to Nicolás Catena Zapata, who became convinced during the 1980s that Argentina could produce wines capable of standing alongside the finest bottles from Bordeaux, Burgundy and California.
Rather than simply concentrating on established Mendoza vineyards, Nicolás began looking towards increasingly high-altitude sites in the foothills of the Andes. In 1992 he planted the Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary, despite being warned that grapes might struggle to ripen at such an extreme elevation. He named the vineyard after his youngest daughter, Adrianna. The experiment proved transformative: the combination of intense mountain sunlight, cool temperatures, large day-to-night temperature shifts and poor soils produced fruit with remarkable aromatic intensity while retaining natural acidity.
Today the family is led by Dr Laura Catena alongside winemaking director Alejandro Vigil, while the Catena Institute of Wine conducts detailed research into the vineyard’s soils, climate and microorganisms. Adrianna has effectively become a collection of tiny crus, with individual parcels bottled separately to demonstrate how dramatically soil can change the character of Malbec even within a single vineyard.
Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard River Malbec, Terroir & Winemaking
River comes from a tiny 2.6-hectare parcel within the Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary, Tupungato Alto, in Mendoza’s Uco Valley. The parcel sits at 1,366 metres above sea level and occupies the site of an ancient riverbed.
Its appearance explains the wine’s name immediately. The ground is covered with large, smooth white stones of alluvial origin, many coated in calcium carbonate. These stones create exceptionally free-draining soils that naturally restrict vine vigour and encourage the roots to work deeply.
They also influence temperature. During sunny days, the stones absorb warmth and release some of it after sunset. Following exceptionally cold nights, however, they remain cool into the following day, moderating the temperature around the vines. Catena associates these stony, calcareous soils with some of the most aromatic and concentrated expressions of Malbec found within Adrianna.
The 2020 growing season added another dimension. Rainfall at Adrianna was dramatically below historical averages, while summer conditions were warmer than usual. The estate harvested the vineyard approximately two to three weeks earlier than normal, helping preserve balance and freshness despite the warmer season.
The wine is 100% Malbec. Around half of the clusters undergo pre-fermentation cold maceration, and fermentation takes place in small 225-litre barrels and 500-litre French-oak roll fermenters, using wild yeasts. Fermentation lasts approximately 17–22 days, with temperatures reaching 25–30°C and around 10–15 days of maceration.
The wine was then aged for approximately 18–21 months in French oak barrels that were already one to two years old. This combination of whole-cluster character, small-vessel fermentation and seasoned oak adds complexity without turning River into a heavily polished or overtly woody Malbec.

Deep, dark ruby-purple in colour, with remarkable aromatic intensity. Blackberry, cassis, black cherry and plum are joined by sour cherry and cranberry, followed by violet, cracked pepper, dried herbs and liquorice. With air, more savoury notes emerge alongside clove, dark chocolate and a distinctive stony, almost saline mineral character.
The palate is full-bodied and concentrated but never heavy. Dense dark fruit is supported by energetic acidity and firm, chalky tannins, with the altitude providing a remarkable sense of coolness underneath the ripeness. Savoury spice, herbs and mineral notes gradually overtake the fruit towards the finish.
There is a slightly austere quality that distinguishes River from softer expressions of Malbec: this is a wine of tension as well as richness. The finish is exceptionally persistent, with blackberry, violet, spice and crushed stone lingering long after each sip. It is already impressive with plenty of air but has the structure to become considerably more complex with bottle age.

Deep red with purple highlights. The nose is immediately expressive, combining blackberry, black cherry, cassis and ripe plum with violet and lavender. As the wine opens, white pepper, dried herbs, sage and subtle earthy notes emerge alongside the characteristic stony minerality of the River parcel.
The palate is concentrated but remarkably energetic. Blackberry and dark plum are framed by vibrant acidity and finely structured, chalky tannins, while savoury herbal and balsamic flavours give additional complexity. Despite the depth of fruit, the 2022 feels surprisingly lifted and precise rather than dense or heavy.
There is an almost mineral grip running through the wine, giving it tension and definition. Floral notes return towards the finish alongside black fruit, herbs and crushed stone, leaving an exceptionally persistent impression.
Critics have particularly highlighted the elegance of the 2022. Wine Advocate described it as the most lifted and weightless of Catena’s Adrianna Malbecs, while Wine Enthusiast noted its combination of cassis, herbs, spice, silky tannins and invigorating acidity.
