Ken Forrester Reserve Chenin Blanc 2025: Rich, Rounded and Full of Character
Ken Forrester Reserve Chenin Blanc 2025 is a generous, beautifully textured white that demonstrates why South African Chenin Blanc has earned such an enthusiastic following. Golden in colour and full-bodied without feeling heavy, it combines ripe orchard and tropical fruit with gentle oak, honeyed richness and refreshing acidity. If you enjoy rounded, oak-aged Chardonnay but fancy trying something a little different, this is an excellent place to start.
Ken Forrester is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s great champions of Chenin Blanc, earning him the affectionate nickname “Mr Chenin”. Ken and Teresa Forrester purchased their historic Stellenbosch property in 1993 and released their first wines the following year. Since then, the estate has played an important role in changing perceptions of Chenin Blanc, demonstrating that the variety can produce serious, expressive wines as well as easy-drinking everyday styles.
The Reserve is made entirely from Chenin Blanc grown in Stellenbosch. Older, naturally low-yielding vines provide concentrated fruit and plenty of flavour, while careful selection during harvest maintains balance and freshness. The winemaking brings together two complementary approaches: part of the juice is fermented in stainless steel to protect its bright fruit character, while approximately half is fermented in French oak for greater body and complexity.
The wine matures for nine months in French oak, with around 20% new barrels. Time on the lees builds a smooth, creamy texture and contributes subtle flavours of honeycomb, caramel and warm spice. The oak is present but carefully judged, adding richness and gentle vanilla rather than covering the character of the fruit.
Ripe pear, juicy golden apple and pineapple lead the way, accompanied by dried apricot, melon and a touch of citrus. Notes of honey, vanilla and lightly toasted oak develop through the palate, balanced by a fresh mineral streak and lively acidity. It is full-bodied, rounded and satisfyingly silky, finishing with lingering orchard fruit and gentle spice. Rich enough to feel indulgent but fresh enough to invite another glass, this is a very easy wine to enjoy.
Ken Forrester Reserve Chenin Blanc 2025 Food Pairing Suggestion:
Try it with coconut and prawn curry, roast chicken in a creamy tarragon sauce or pan-fried sea bass with brown butter and capers. Its ripe fruit works beautifully with mild spice, while the rounded texture suits richer seafood and poultry dishes. For a vegetarian option, pair it with roasted butternut squash risotto, cauliflower cheese or grilled halloumi with apricot and herb couscous.
