Mullineux Old Vines White is a brilliant expression of why the Swartland has become one of South Africa’s most exciting regions for white wine. Chenin Blanc provides the backbone, joined by small amounts of Clairette Blanche, Grenache Blanc, Semillon Gris and Viognier to create a wine with considerably more depth than a straightforward varietal Chenin. Ripe pear, peach and citrus sit alongside white flowers, almond and subtle spice, while the palate combines generous texture with vibrant natural acidity. There is a lovely savoury quality running beneath the ripe fruit, preventing the wine from feeling heavy despite its richness. The supplied 2025 offer describes this balance particularly well: warm-climate fruit and texture combined with freshness and savoury character.

Mullineux Signature Old Vines Swartland White Blend, Producer

Mullineux was founded in 2007 by husband-and-wife winemakers Chris and Andrea Mullineux and has developed into one of the defining estates of modern South African wine. The winery has been named Platter’s Wine Guide Winery of the Year five times, while its philosophy centres on low-intervention winemaking and vineyards that clearly express the varied soils of the Swartland.

Sustainability is fundamental to the project. Mullineux works with old, low-yielding vineyards and regenerative farming practices designed to improve soil health and vineyard resilience. In 2025 the estate achieved full organic certification and became the first South African winery to achieve Regenerative Organic Certification. The Signature range sits above Kloof Street and brings together carefully selected vineyards to create wines that represent the wider Swartland rather than one individual soil type.

Mullineux Signature Old Vines Swartland White Blend, Terroir & Winemaking

The wine is sourced from low-yielding old bush-vine vineyards spread across the Swartland. Chenin Blanc forms the majority of the blend, supported in the 2025 wine by Clairette Blanche, Grenache Blanc, Semillon Gris and Viognier. These varieties grow across contrasting ancient soils, including decomposed granite, schist and iron-rich sites, allowing each parcel to contribute something different to the finished wine.

Older Chenin vines bring concentration and natural acidity, while the supporting varieties contribute fragrance, body and subtle savoury complexity. The fruit is harvested by hand and whole-bunch pressed before fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Fermentation and maturation take place predominantly in seasoned French oak, including larger-format vessels that build texture without introducing obvious new-oak flavours. The wine remains on its lees during maturation, developing greater depth and a creamy, layered quality while retaining freshness. The supplied offer particularly emphasises the wine’s old bush-vine origins and its combination of warm-climate texture with vibrant acidity.

Mullineux Signature Old Vines Swartland White Blend 2025, Tasting Notes

Pale gold in colour, with an expressive nose of ripe pear, peach, orange blossom and yellow citrus. As the wine opens, more complex notes of almond, dried honey, ginger and gentle spice begin to appear.

The palate is broad and richly textured, with ripe pear and stone fruit balanced by grapefruit, citrus pith and bright natural acidity. Fine lees and old-oak maturation contribute weight and a subtle creamy quality without creating obvious vanilla or toast. Almond, ginger and savoury spice develop towards the finish, which is long, fresh and gently mineral. The 2025 release is particularly noted for its combination of ripe fruit, texture and refreshing savoury definition.

Did you know?

Mullineux’s Old Vines White is designed to express the Swartland as a whole, rather than one particular vineyard. The different parcels grow on some of the region’s major soil types, allowing the finished blend to combine several expressions of the landscape.
