Piper Hiedsieck is one of the oldest Champagne houses, who’s story begins in 1777 and Marie Antoinette being the brands first embassador. Today Piper Heidsieck is world-famours, releasing as many as 5 million botttles as year, most of which is exported to Europe and beyond.
Piper Heidsieck Hors-Série 1982 is a limited release, the second opus of Émilien Boutillat – the legendary cellar master of the house. Émilien recalls that when he started working as the Head Winemaker in 2018, the 1982 vintage was one of the first he learned about. After tasting it both with its dosage and while it was still on the racks, he decided to include it in the Hors-Série collection. It was exquisite, a stunning manifestation of the Piper-Heidsieck style. By comparing Hors-Série 1982 with Brut Sauvage 1982, Émilien was able to show how various ageing techniques may improve a vintage’s personality for this second edition of the Hors-Série collection.
2,500 bottles were released in January 2022 after being kept under their original seal on riddling racks for four decades to unveil the Hors-Série 1982. Each bottle of the Hors-Série 1982, a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, has its unique identity thanks to 40 years of lees ageing.
1982 vintage: the year 1982 was fortunate both in terms of quality and quantity. After two years of disappointing results, the vintage gained notoriety for its structure, elegance, and refinement and was expected to be very promising.
Hors-Série 1982 demonstrated beautiful aromas of dried pineapple, mirabelle plums, kumquats, and fresh quince, enhanced by a hint of ginger and bergamot tea. On the palate, the wine unfolds to offer toasted bread and smoky coffee bean overtones balancing out the wine’s minerality. Despite expectations, the tight, fresh mouthfeel is enticing. The finish is long with a delicate touch of chocolate and mirabelle eau-de-vie.
