Duncan – the man behind this brand – is a surfer-turned-winemaking-master who gave Cape Point Vineyards its enviable, Platter’s Wine Guide-decorated reputation. Until 2016, when he bravely ventured out on his own to create the wines he had always wanted to.
Duncan developed an understanding of coastal settings during his tenure at Cape Point and has since sought both marine and high elevation places all across the Western Cape. Some of his locations can be somewhat surprising; for example, the Girl Next Door Syrah lot was simply planted on a nearby residential estate as some aesthetic greenery in the spaces between the homes, and yet it is now one of South Africa’s most sought-after wines! The Piekenierskloof Grenache used in Thief in the Night also comes from the same vineyard as Eben Sadie’s Soldaat.
Although the wines are called “Savage” they are anything but; they are poise, pure, and elegant.
The 40-year-old Cinsault vines used to make the 2021 Follow The Line. It has a rather exquisite, red berry fruit nose that is well-defined and focused, with hints of rooibos and bergamot. The palate is finely constructed with a light grip and with allspice and sage toward the lingering finish. It has a subtle intensity, great acidity, and nice structure. Difficult to resist drinking it now but it’ll keep developing in the next 15 years.
Food pairing suggestion: Escargots à la Bourguignonne.
