Duncan Savage is a young South African wine producer, whose wines rapidly gained popularity short after the debut release of 2011 Red and 2012 White.
After spending 11 years working at Cape Point Vineyards, which Platter’s Wine Guide rates as a five-star winery, and having gained extensive experience in both high-altitude and maritime winemaking, Duncan Savage finally realised his dream of making his own wines. The excellence of the very first released wines propelled this young prodigy into the public eye. The Savage Wines portfolio has grown significantly since relocating to a new urban winery in Salt River, Cape Town, and these cult South African wines frequently sell out upon release.
This Chenin has very attractive rich aromas of crushed gravel, apple cider, dried basil and thyme, yellow orchard fruits, and hairy yellow peaches. There is a lot of spice and pungency, as well as salinity, and textured palate weight. It gradually unveils aromas of apple puree, aged honey, crunchy peaches, orange flower, pineapple pastilles, and a very light touch of vanilla pod spice. However, for those patient enough to mature it for a few more years, the wine promises much more. The finish is quite linear with a stony core of minerality.
Food pairing suggestion: Haddock, salmon and capers fishcakes.
