Comte Lafond Grande Cuvée Sancerre: Our Top Sancerre
This is our favourite Sancerre, and it is easy to see why. Comte Lafond Grande Cuvée is a sensational Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc with real depth, lovely herbaceous hints and a long, mineral finish. If you love Sancerre, this is the bottle to treat yourself to.
It comes from Baron Patrick de Ladoucette, one of the most important and historic producers in the Loire. The Grande Cuvée is the top expression of his Comte Lafond Sancerre, selected from the finest parcels in the villages of Bué, Chaudoux, Chavignol and Verdigny, with vines 25 to 35 years old.
What sets it apart is the soil. The vines grow on a mix of limestone, including the famous caillottes slopes of Chavignol, and flint clay, which give the wine its precise, mineral edge and hints of flint. It is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and aged on its fine lees, adding texture without any oak.
Expect lemon, green apple and gooseberry on the nose, with citrus zest, white flowers, freshly cut grass and elderflower. As it opens up, you will find flint and a lovely chalky minerality. The palate is dry and full, with a good core of fruit, lively acidity and a long, balanced finish of lemon and minerals.
Comte Lafond Grande Cuvée Sancerre Food Pairing Suggestion:
The classic match is local goat’s cheese, especially Crottin de Chavignol. It is also brilliant with oysters, grilled fish, shellfish, sushi and herb-roasted chicken.
