Sichel Selection Margaux, Producer

Maison Sichel is a Bordeaux institution, founded in 1883 and still family-run today. While the name Sichel is perhaps best known for its ownership of Château d’Angludet in Margaux, the family also manages négociant and estate projects across the region, including the celebrated Château Palmer partnership in the mid-20th century. The Margaux Sélection bottling reflects the Sichel philosophy: combining their intimate knowledge of the appellation with careful vineyard sourcing to create a wine that is faithful to the Margaux style – elegant, perfumed, and finely structured. It is a wine designed to be approachable yet representative of one of Bordeaux’s most cherished appellations.

Sichel Selection Margaux, Terroir & Winemaking

Margaux, the southernmost commune of the Médoc, is famed for its gravelly, well-drained soils, which force vines to dig deep and produce fruit of intensity and refinement. The appellation is also known for its finesse compared to its Médoc neighbours, with Cabernet Sauvignon giving structure and longevity, Merlot contributing plushness, and Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc adding aromatic lift. For the Sélection, Sichel sources fruit from growers whose vineyards lie on classic gravel and sand over limestone, ensuring purity and typicity. Grapes are harvested at optimum ripeness, destemmed, and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Ageing takes place in French oak barrels, with a portion new, for 12–14 months, integrating spice and texture while preserving Margaux’s hallmark perfume and finesse.

Sichel Selection Margaux, Tasting Notes

The wine displays a deep ruby colour with garnet hints at the rim. Aromatically, it is expressive and refined: violets, cassis, redcurrant, and cedar, interwoven with subtle vanilla and graphite. On the palate, it is medium-bodied yet structured, with silky tannins framing flavours of black cherry, plum, tobacco, and spice. A bright seam of acidity lends freshness, while the finish is long and savoury, lingering with notes of dried herbs and cocoa. This Margaux Sélection captures the appellation’s signature balance: elegance with underlying power, suitable for both near-term enjoyment and mid-term ageing.

Did you know?
Margaux is Bordeaux’s largest communal appellation, home to more classified growths than any other Médoc commune.
