West Midlands Distillery Black Spiced Rum is a rich, dark and warming spiced rum built around the flavours of molasses, treacle, caramel and Madagascan vanilla, with gentle allspice providing warmth and balance. At 40% ABV, it has considerably more backbone than many sweeter flavoured rum drinks: the nose is immediately indulgent, with dark sugar and vanilla, while the palate moves through treacle, caramel and molasses before the spice begins to emerge. Despite the dark appearance and generous sweetness of flavour, the allspice keeps the finish from becoming cloying, making it equally convincing neat, over ice or with a mixer. It is also a bottle with a strong sense of local identity. The label maps the Black Country and Birmingham Canal Network, including little references to the distillery itself and its bar beside “the cut”, linking a Caribbean-inspired spirit with the industrial landscape of the West Midlands. It is a deliberately accessible, crowd-pleasing style, but there is enough depth and strength underneath the sweetness to make it a genuinely useful bottle behind the bar.

West Midlands Distillery Black Spiced Rum, Producer

West Midlands Distillery is an independent family-run distillery founded in the Black Country in 2017, building on what the family describes as three generations of distilling heritage. Gin, rum and vodka were among its first spirits, alongside bespoke production for other drinks businesses, although the long-term ambition from the beginning was to eventually make its own single malt whisky. That ambition led to whisky being laid down from 2021, the first whisky produced in the county of West Midlands being bottled in August 2024, and the first commercial single malt release following in July 2025. The operation remains strongly focused on small-batch distillation and uses four 100% copper pot stills named Doris, Lenny, Patricia and Sharon after members of the family. The distillery has also been verified by the “Actually Made In” campaign, which highlights producers genuinely making spirits in the region stated on the bottle rather than simply applying a local brand identity to liquid produced elsewhere.

That local identity is particularly important to Black Spiced Rum. Rather than choosing generic pirate imagery or a fictional Caribbean backstory, the bottle celebrates Birmingham and the Black Country, particularly the canal system that once formed such an important part of the region’s industrial network. The spirit itself has also received recognition close to home: Black Spiced Rum was voted Product of the Year at the Birmingham Association of Bartenders Awards in 2024, an award the distillery particularly valued because it was voted for by people working within Birmingham hospitality.

West Midlands Distillery Black Spiced Rum, Production & Style

The producer describes the flavour profile around dark molasses, caramel, Madagascan vanilla and warm allspice. Another specialist rum source describes the spirit as beginning with Caribbean rum and being distilled or developed in the West Midlands, but the distillery does not currently publish a detailed technical sheet explaining the precise Caribbean origin, fermentation, distillation stages, ageing regime or proportion of locally distilled spirit. It is therefore better not to attribute a specific Caribbean country or cask maturation to the bottle without confirmation. What is clear is that Black Spiced Rum is designed around a considerably darker and richer flavour profile than a lightly spiced golden rum, using molasses and treacle-like flavours to provide depth, caramel and vanilla for roundness, and allspice to prevent the finished spirit becoming one-dimensional.

At 40% ABV, it retains full spirit strength rather than dropping into the lower-alcohol territory occupied by many flavoured rum drinks. That makes an important difference when mixing: there is enough body and alcoholic structure to remain visible beside ginger beer, ginger ale or cola, while the caramel and vanilla flavours make it approachable enough to sip without a mixer. West Midlands Distillery specifically recommends it neat, over ice, with cola or ginger ale, or as the base for a Dark & Stormy-style serve.

West Midlands Distillery Black Spiced Rum, Tasting Notes

Deep dark amber to mahogany in appearance. The nose is immediately rich, with dark molasses, treacle and caramel followed by Madagascan vanilla, brown sugar and warming baking spice. There is an almost burnt-sugar quality underneath, but the vanilla keeps it soft and inviting rather than bitter. On the palate, caramel and treacle arrive first, giving a rounded, almost dessert-like richness, before darker molasses flavours and allspice begin to build. The texture is smooth and generous, with the 40% alcohol providing enough warmth to balance the sweeter flavours. Madagascan vanilla continues through the middle, joined by a gentle peppery and clove-like impression from the allspice. The finish is warming and persistent, with vanilla, caramelised sugar and spice lingering after the darker molasses fades. It is intentionally bold and immediately appealing rather than dry or austere, but the spice gives enough contrast to keep the sweetness under control.

Try It With: Black Spiced Rum & Ginger with Burnt Lime

The distillery itself recommends Black Spiced Rum with ginger ale and specifically highlights a Dark & Stormy-style cocktail, so this serve keeps things very simple and lets the rum remain the focus. Ginger amplifies the allspice and warming character, while fresh lime cuts through the molasses and caramel. Charring the lime takes only a couple of minutes but gives a subtle smoky, caramelised note that works particularly well with the rum’s dark-sugar flavours.
