Leftfield Hawke’s Bay Malbec: New Zealand’s Adventurous Side
Leftfield wines are all about exploration, pushing beyond the varieties normally associated with New Zealand to see what else can thrive in its varied vineyards. This Hawke’s Bay Malbec is a brilliant example: bold, concentrated and reassuringly rich, but with the freshness and energy that New Zealand wines do so well.
Leftfield forms part of the Te Awa collection, based in Hawke’s Bay’s renowned Gimblett Gravels wine-growing district. Its warm climate and well-drained soils provide excellent conditions for deeply coloured red varieties such as Malbec, allowing the grapes to develop plenty of ripeness while retaining balance.
Deep and dark in the glass, the wine has a concentrated core of blackberry, ripe plum and blueberry, lifted by violet, cracked black pepper and a touch of dried herb. Liquorice and dark chocolate add further depth. The palate is rich and generously textured, with structured tannins, fresh acidity and a long, spicy finish.
Leftfield Malbec Food Pairing Suggestion:
This deserves a char-grilled T-bone steak, preferably still juicy in the middle. The wine’s concentrated black fruit works beautifully with the caramelised exterior of the meat, while its structured tannins are an excellent match for the steak’s richness.
