Casa Ferreirinha Esteva: Bright, Great-Value Douro Red

Portuguese reds offer incredible value for money right now, and Casa Ferreirinha Esteva is one of the best around. From one of the Douro’s pioneering still wine producers, it has wonderful bright fruit and good structure.

Casa Ferreirinha takes its name from Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, the formidable widow who ran the Port house Ferreira in the 1800s and was affectionately known as “Ferreirinha”. The estate was founded in 1952 by Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, who released the first vintage of the legendary Barca-Velha that same year and pioneered quality still wines in a region famous for Port.

Esteva is a blend of classic Douro grapes: Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, grown on the region’s schist soils. It is fermented in stainless steel and left unoaked to keep the fruit fresh and vibrant.

Expect ripe strawberries, juicy cherries and floral hints. The palate is smooth and fresh, with polished tannins, well-integrated acidity and a red-fruit finish.

Esteva Douro Food Pairing Suggestion:

Try it with grilled chicken piri-piri, pork chops, sausages, pizza or a tomato-based pasta. It is also great with a simple cheese board.
