This high scoring Riesling is powerfully spicy yet playfully elegant — this is Dellchen in all its glory. It captivates with an almost hypnotic allure, redefining the concept of peachy aromatics in the variety.
The Vineyards and Winemaking
This historic steep-slope vineyard, which Donnhoff has lovingly revived from its long slumber, now shines in new splendour and is a true rediscovery. Nestled in a rocky hollow, its steep terraces are characterised by slate and porphyry soils. Thanks to the protective embrace of the surrounding cliffs, the Riesling grapes here remain healthy for an extended period, achieving perfect ripeness year after year. Dellchen is therefore ideally suited for producing outstanding dry wines that can effortlessly rival the finest in the world.
Following meticulous, selective hand-picking in multiple passes, the grapes are gently pressed and then matured in large oak casks. A maturation period of at least six months on the full lees, followed by another two months on the fine lees, significantly contributes to the wine’s longevity.
‘GG’ Stands for Quality!
GG stands for “Grosses Gewächs,” which is the highest quality designation for dry wines in Germany. It signifies that the wine comes from a top vineyard site and is produced in accordance with strict quality standards set by the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), an association of elite German wineries.
Donnhoff Dellchen Riesling GG 2023 In The Glass
Bright and expressive, with a finely honed structure and lively notes of citrus, mandarin and fresh pink grapefruit. The palate is sleek and vibrant, finishing with an alluring mineral edge. Dellchen is a distinctive site where two contrasting soil types meet: up to two metres of slate layered over volcanic bedrock on a dramatic 70% slope. The fruit is harvested from small, carefully selected parcels and the wine is matured in a mix of traditional German Fuder casks and stainless steel.
