Domaine Lafage La Retro, Producer
Domaine Lafage is a historic, family-run estate nestled between Perpignan and the Spanish border in the Côtes Catalanes, Roussillon. Established in 1798, it has been guided for generations by a passion for expressing the diverse and dramatic landscapes of southern France. Since taking the helm in 2001, Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage have transformed the domaine into one of the region’s most celebrated producers. With vineyards spread across three distinct and emblematic terroirs (from Mediterranean coastlines to rugged schist hillsides) the Lafages craft wines that capture both the sun-drenched warmth and the refreshing vitality of Roussillon.
Jean-Marc Lafage is one of France’s most awarded independent winemakers, having received multiple gold medals at the Concours Général Agricole de Paris and over 24 recommendations in the Guide Hachette since 2009. His wines are praised for their approachability, authenticity, and value, earning acclaim from critics including Robert Parker, who has long championed the domaine’s expressive and characterful wines.
Domaine Lafage La Retro, Terroir & Winemaking
La Rétro is an ode to the timeless wines of old Roussillon — light, vibrant reds designed for easy enjoyment with family and friends. The cuvée blends Carignan (50%), Syrah (40%), and Grenache (10%) sourced from old vines rooted in stony, clay-limestone soils. The region’s Mediterranean climate, moderated by cooling sea breezes and the Tramontane wind, ensures perfect ripening while preserving natural freshness.
Vinification is carried out with great care to emphasise purity and drinkability. The grapes are harvested at optimal maturity and fermented at controlled temperatures to capture bright fruit aromas and gentle tannins. A short maturation in concrete tanks preserves the wine’s lively, juicy style, a true “vin de plaisir” that recalls the convivial spirit of southern France.
Domaine Lafage La Retro, Tasting Notes
Domaine Lafage La Rétro is a vibrant, fruit-driven red brimming with southern charm. Aromas of fresh red cherry, crushed raspberry, and wild herbs lead into a supple, medium-bodied palate bursting with juicy fruit, soft tannins, and a hint of spice. Balanced and refreshing, it finishes with a touch of minerality and savoury depth. Designed for pure enjoyment, La Rétro perfectly embodies the relaxed, sunlit lifestyle of the Mediterranean.
Food pairing suggestion: Serve slightly chilled with charcuterie, grilled lamb cutlets, or tapas-style dishes. It’s equally at home with Mediterranean vegetables, wood-fired pizza, or a picnic under the sun.
