Gérard Bertrand Orange Gold, Producer
Gérard Bertrand is one of the most influential and visionary winemakers in the South of France, known for championing biodynamics and elevating the reputation of Languedoc-Roussillon on the global stage. A former professional rugby player turned world-class vigneron, Bertrand brings energy and precision to every project he touches. Orange Gold is part of his “Natural Jewel” series, wines that celebrate purity, minimal intervention and the artistry of ancient winemaking traditions. Inspired by the centuries-old skin-contact whites of Georgia, Bertrand created Orange Gold as a modern French expression of a deeply historic style, blending Mediterranean varieties in a way that highlights both their individuality and their harmony.
Gérard Bertrand Orange Gold, Terroir & Winemaking
The fruit for Orange Gold comes from a patchwork of organic and biodynamic vineyards across the sun-drenched landscapes of Languedoc. The blend includes Chardonnay, Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Marsanne, and Muscat, chardc each contributing its own texture, aroma and structure. What defines this wine, though, is the choice to ferment the white grapes on their skins, just as in red winemaking. This slow, natural maceration extracts colour, tannin and complexity, giving the wine its amber-glow hue and distinctive textural feel. Fermentation relies on indigenous yeasts, with minimal sulphur and gentle handling throughout. The result is a wine that sits beautifully between white and orange, delivering freshness, depth and a sense of place in equal measure.
Gérard Bertrand Orange Gold, Tasting Notes
Orange Gold pours a shimmering amber with copper reflections. Aromatically, it’s vibrant and expressive: apricot, quince, orange blossom, dried herbs and crushed jasmine leap from the glass. On the palate, it is textured yet vibrant: think mandarin peel, nectarine, white tea, subtle spice and a fine tannic grip that gives structure without heaviness. A gentle bitterness reminiscent of citrus pith appears on the finish, adding lift and complexity. It’s refreshing, intriguing, and wonderfully food-friendly, a sunshine-soaked Mediterranean take on the orange wine style.
Food Pairing Suggestion
Perfect with Moroccan tagine, grilled octopus, roasted pumpkin with tahini, sushi with ginger, or soft cheeses washed in brine: orange wine loves bold flavours and aromatic spices.
