The Palacios name holds a prestigious status in the world of Spanish fine wine. In 1945, the family patriarch, José Palacios Remondo, laid the foundation for their Rioja winery. With four out of his nine children continuing his legacy. However, Álvaro Palacios, the seventh child, brought Priorat region into the spotlight with Spain’s exceptional and highly coveted wine, the groundbreaking L’Ermita.
Having devoted two years to learning at Petrus under the guidance of Jean Pierre Moueix, and later collaborating with René Barbier, a prominent figure in Priorat, Alvaro brought a wealth of experience when he founded his winery in 1989. He is recognised as the dynamic and driving force that moved Priorat to the forefront of the Spanish wine scene.
The Gratallops is a blend of Garnacha and Cariñena, with approximately 40% of full clusters used for fermentation; the resulting wine exhibits a vibrant freshness with acidic berry notes. The aroma is meticulously defined, revealing multiple layers of red berries, strawberries, blueberries, hibiscus, and mineral undertones. There’s a subtle hint of moss, stems, and white pepper as well. The wine is beautifully integrated and agile, boasting a precise, medium-bodied palate that is elegantly framed by firm yet exceptionally silky, polished tannins. The finish is refined and juicy, enhanced by subtle herbal notes, with an impressively long finish. With its longevity and freshness, this wine expected to mature gracefully over time.
