The Symington family was among the pioneers of modern Douro wines. In the 1990s, they began producing Douro DOC wines from the same vineyards and indigenous grape varieties that had always made great port. The Altano range enjoys global distribution and widespread recognition for its quality and distinctiveness.
Today, the family owns about 26 Quintas in the Douro Superior and the prime Cima-Corgo subregions, making it the largest landholder in the Douro. The family began producing Douro DOC wines in 1999 from their vineyards. The Symingtons are dedicated to the indigenous grape varieties of the Douro region and strive to capture the natural fragrance, flavors, and aromas of the Douro in their wines. They practice sustainable viticulture with minimal intervention both in the vineyard and the winery.
All Symington vineyards are managed under sustainable viticulture practices aimed at minimum intervention to protect and promote biodiversity. The family farms the largest organic vineyard in the Douro, spanning 112 hectares. This philosophy of minimum intervention is also upheld in the winery, where small batches of grapes are carefully handled using modern technology to safeguard and maximise quality.
Each year, the winemakers face the challenge of producing wines that best represent producer’s unparalleled collection of vineyards. They select the most suitable grapes based on the specific conditions and characteristics of that year’s harvest. In a region with 21,400 farmers, our 26 Quintas stand out as an exceptional guarantee of quality, providing our viticulture and winemaking teams with a level of control and choice that is unique in the area.
