Blockhead Shiraz: Old-Vine Swartland Shiraz
Blockhead Shiraz is a great-value South African red and the partner wine to our popular Blockhead Chenin Blanc. It is fresh and juicy, with cherry, blackberry and spice, and a lovely lift from old vines and whole-bunch fermentation.
Blockhead is part of Moreno Wines’ “Made by Moreno” range, made with their winemaking partners in South Africa’s Coastal Region. Most of the Shiraz comes from Swartland, one of the Cape’s most exciting areas for characterful reds.
The vines are over 60 years old. Around 30% of the stems are included in the fermentation, adding freshness and spice, and the wine is aged for three months in old French oak. Towards the end, the wine is run back over the skins for extra depth.
Expect ripe cherry and blackberry with a peppery, spicy edge. The palate is fresh and medium-bodied, with juicy fruit, soft tannins and a lively finish.
Blockhead Shiraz Food Pairing Suggestion:
Try it with herby sausages, burgers, barbecued chicken, lamb koftas or a cottage pie.
