Donnafugata are legends of Sicily, and produce an array of wines, all considered to be some of the best in their category. It is a winery that is frequently associated with Sicilian fine wines. The company is owned by the Rallo family and produces wine throughout Sicily. Red wines from Donnafugata are a true representation of Sicilian soil and are incredibly sophisticated and enduring. Wines with a surprise volcanic flavour or a delicate, flowery texture.
The Donnafugata is named after Gabriella Rallo, the founder’s wife. Innovator and brave woman Gabriella Anca Rallo established high-quality vineyards in Sicily. She is the actual “donnafugata,” or “woman on the run,” who quit her profession as a teacher to work full-time in the vineyards of Contessa Entellina. She is also one of the first women to make wine in Sicily, a region traditionally dominated by men.
This Nero d’Avola Sherazade offers a fruity aroma with notes of cherry and plum, as well as subtle spicy undertones (black pepper) and violet floral notes. These aromas reappear on the palate, and the wine finishes with comforting tannin and is exceptionally delicate and fresh.
In the glass, Donnafugata Sherazade Nero d’Avola Sicilia DOC has a deep ruby colour with purple hues. The nose is intense and complex, with aromas of red and black fruit such as cherry, blackberry, and plum, as well as hints of black pepper and liquorice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with a smooth texture and velvety tannins. Flavours of red fruit dominate, with notes of vanilla and spice adding complexity.
It is a great introduction to the Nero d’Avola grape and a good choice for those looking for an affordable and approachable Sicilian red wine.
