Eisenstone celebrates the rich German heritage of the Barossa Valley, with its name deriving from a blend of the German word for iron, “Eisen,” and the English word “stone.” This name honors both the ironstone soils that nurture the vines and the stone used by the original German settlers to construct many of the iconic Barossa buildings that still stand today.
Eisenstone is dedicated to establishing itself as a specialist in Barossa Valley Shiraz, the region’s iconic variety recognized worldwide. The Barossa Valley is home to several distinct sub-regions, each with unique climate and soil conditions that impart subtle differences to the Shiraz produced.
Stephen Cook, the creator and winemaker of Eisenstone, carefully selects special parcels of grapes from the ‘western ranges’ of the Barossa Valley, an area renowned for producing fuller-bodied, powerful wines with remarkable depth of flavour and exceptional ageing potential. Each wine released under the Eisenstone label is produced in limited volumes and individually numbered to reflect its unique character.
The grapes for Koonunga Shiraz were sourced from the Becker Vineyard in the Koonunga sub-region of the Barossa Valley. This small vineyard was owned by the Becker family for four generations before being recently acquired by the Hoffmann family. The vineyard is situated on deeper loam soils over red clays, following the path of a small creek that runs through the property.
The grapes were fermented in small batches and then matured in 50% new French oak for 20 months before bottling. The winemaking process involves minimal intervention, with the wine undergoing minimal movement before bottling and not being cold stabilised or filtered.
This Shiraz boasts an intense ruby red colour and exudes classic forest berry fruit aromas. Ripe berry notes are layered with spicy oak characters that provide structure and support. The aromatic blackberry and blueberry fruits extend to the palate, which is opulent and a quintessential representation of the region.
This wine is expected to continue to age gracefully for 15+ years.
