El Xitxarel·lo: The Xarel-lo with a Cheeky Label

El Xitxarel·lo is a crisp, dry white with a sense of humour. The label is covered with more than 50 Spanish and Catalan insults, which makes it a brilliant bottle to bring to a party. Luckily, what is inside is anything but insulting: fresh, clean and very drinkable.

It is made by Caves Martí Serdà, a family-owned winery in Penedès, Catalonia. The region is best known as the home of Cava, and Xarel-lo is one of the classic grapes used to make it. Here, though, it is made into a still, dry white wine that shows just how good the grape can be on its own.

Xarel-lo gives wines with lovely freshness and a gently creamy texture. This one is organic, vegan and refreshingly light, at 11.5% alcohol.

Expect fresh citrus and peach on the nose, with creamy stone fruit on the palate. It is dry and crisp, with clean minerality, bright citrus acidity and a smooth, velvety body.

El Xitxarel·lo Food Pairing Suggestion:

Made for Spanish tapas. Try it with pan con tomate, boquerones, calamari, grilled prawns or a simple seafood paella.
