Gavi di Gavi La Minaia: Our Favourite Gavi
This is our favourite Gavi, and it is everything you could ask for: brisk acidity, crisp green apple and a lovely medium body. Nicola Bergaglio’s La Minaia is the single vineyard Gavi that serious white wine lovers seek out.
Nicola Bergaglio is based in Rovereto, in the heart of the Gavi area of southern Piedmont. Minaia is a single hectare of vines on a gentle slope at around 300 metres, right in front of the winery. Its red clay soil is exceptionally high in iron, which is why it is treated as a cru.
The wine is made from 100% Cortese, the grape of Gavi. It is hand-picked, then fermented and aged on its lees in stainless steel, with no oak at all. Breezes from the Ligurian coast slow the ripening and help keep the wine’s mineral tension.
Expect citrus, green apple and jasmine with a chalky, mineral edge. The palate is taut and fresh, with fine fruit, precise acidity and a long, mineral finish.
Gavi di Gavi La Minaia Food Pairing Suggestion:
Lovely with scallops with lime and fennel, raw prawns, seafood risotto, grilled fish or asparagus. It is also a great aperitif.
