Graham’s 20 Tawny Port
Graham’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port is one of those bottles that makes the end of a meal feel properly special. Rich, mellow and wonderfully smooth, it sits in that sweet spot where long cask ageing brings layers of nuts, caramel and dried fruit, while still keeping enough brightness and freshness to stop everything feeling too heavy.
Graham’s is one of Portugal’s great Port houses, with roots going back to 1820 and a long-standing reputation for generous, polished, expressive Ports. Today, it is part of the Symington family’s portfolio, with deep ties to the Douro Valley and a strong focus on blending, ageing and preserving the character of classic Port styles.
This 20 Year Old Tawny is made from traditional Port varieties, including Alicante Bouschet, Tinta Amarela, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. It is aged in oak barrels for an average of 20 years, allowing the wine to slowly soften, oxidise and develop its beautiful amber-tawny colour. That long ageing is what gives it such a lovely balance of mature complexity and baked red fruit intensity.
In the glass, it opens with aromas of raisins, figs, toasted almonds, orange peel and caramel. The palate is rich and velvety, with flavours of toffee, roasted nuts, dried fruit, gentle spice and a little citrus brightness running through the finish. It is sweet, of course, but not cloying. The acidity keeps it lifted, while the long, smooth finish makes it feel elegant and very satisfying. Serve slightly chilled.
Graham’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port Food Pairing Suggestion:
This is gorgeous with nutty desserts, fruitcake, crème brûlée, sticky toffee pudding or vanilla ice cream. It is also brilliant with a cheese board, especially hard cheeses, blue cheese, dried figs and walnuts. Or just pour a small glass after dinner and let it do all the work.
