Kumeu River winery wins us over again with celebrated attention to detail in the vineyards and precision in the winery. Over time the estate has gained popularity and recognition for their outstanding Burgundy-style Chardonnays.
To say more, in 2014 London blind tasting organised by Farr Vintners, Hunting Hill Chardonnay triumphed over the Premier Cru and Village Burgundies in every flight.
The vineyards, originally planted in 1992, were replanted in 2000, performed even better than before.
Kumeu River Hunting Hill Chardonnay 2023 Vintage:
This wine opens with enticing aromas of crisp apples, white peaches, and steel, interwoven with delicate hints of lemongrass, fresh basil, flint, and white flowers. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, featuring a tightly focused and dense center. A vibrant acidity adds energy, while the finish is both crunchy and flavorful. Impressively fresh and dense, it strikes a perfect balance between vitality and depth.
100% barrel fermented with 25% of new oak, this Chardonnay is dense, complex and concentrated. Still a bit shy on the nose, it will only improve with time: expect rich palette and complex aromas, full of preserved lemon and ripe peach.
Kumeu River Hunting Hill Chardonnay 2024 Vintage:
The 2024 vintage is an outstanding year for Hunting Hill. Despite low yields, the fruit was pristine and perfectly ripe, resulting in a wine of remarkable purity and concentration. The nose is restrained in its youth, offering subtle hints of lemon and lime blossom with a delicate flinty edge. On the palate, it is long and focused, with impressive density reflecting the small crop. This is a superb expression of Hunting Hill that promises to evolve beautifully, reaching its peak after 7–8 years of careful cellaring.
Food pairing suggestion: Roasted monkfish with parsley butter.
