Mahi The Alias Sauvignon Blanc shows a richer, more savoury side of Marlborough’s favourite white grape. Vibrant and energetic, it combines refreshing fruit with a rounded texture and impressive length. If you enjoy Sauvignon Blanc but fancy something with a little more depth, this is a lovely bottle to explore.
Founded by Brian and Nicola Bicknell in 2001, Mahi focuses on the individuality of Marlborough’s vineyard sites, with particular attention to texture and wines that work beautifully with food. The Alias comes from a small parcel in the Byrne vineyard in Conder’s Bend, where organically managed vines grow on gravel soils laid down by an ancient riverbed.
Hand-picked grapes are fermented with wild yeasts in French oak barrels, followed by extended contact with the lees — the yeast sediment left after fermentation. This adds savoury complexity and a generous mouthfeel while allowing the wine’s freshness to shine through.
Tropical and citrus fruit flavours meet dried herbs and subtle nutty notes. The palate is rich and rounded, with a savoury depth that makes each sip interesting. Lively acidity keeps everything bright and balanced, carrying the flavours through a long, refreshing finish.
Mahi Sauvignon Blanc Food Pairing Suggestion:
Try it with pan-fried sea bass, buttery new potatoes and a lemon and herb sauce. Its freshness suits the fish beautifully, while the richer texture also makes it a delicious partner for roast chicken or a creamy leek tart.
