Martín Códax Lías: Albariño Aged on Its Lees
Lías is Martín Códax’s textured, aromatic Albariño, with citrus, stone fruit and saline notes. It is fresh and lively, but with added depth from ageing on its lees, making it a step up from everyday Albariño.
Martín Códax is one of the best-known producers in Rías Baixas, the home of Albariño on Spain’s Atlantic coast in Galicia. The cool, damp climate and granite soils give Albariño its famous freshness and salty minerality.
“Lías” means lees in Spanish. The grapes are hand-harvested from low-yielding vineyards and whole-cluster pressed, then the wine is aged for seven months on its fine lees in stainless steel, which gives it a rounder, richer texture.
Expect quince, pear, grapefruit and stone fruit, with a hint of pastry. The palate is dry and medium-bodied, with fresh acidity, a textured feel and a saline finish.
Martín Códax Lías Albariño Food Pairing Suggestion:
Perfect with seafood such as grilled octopus, prawns, scallops and hake. It is also great with white meats, risotto and semi-aged cheeses.
