Kloof Street Swartland Rouge is exactly the kind of red that has helped make South Africa’s New Wave so exciting: vibrant, savoury and full of character without relying on excessive ripeness or heavy oak. Syrah forms the backbone, bringing dark berries, pepper and structure, while Grenache contributes juicy red fruit and Cinsault adds perfume and lift. A generous proportion of whole-bunch fermentation introduces floral and herbal complexity, giving the wine an appealingly wild edge alongside its ripe black cherry fruit. Medium-bodied, fresh and wonderfully supple, this is a Rhône-inspired blend that feels unmistakably Swartland. It has enough structure for grilled meat, yet enough brightness to drink slightly chilled with charcuterie or Mediterranean-style dishes. The supplied South African offer particularly highlights its black cherry, pepper spice, perfume and vibrancy.
Mullineux Kloof Street Swartland Rouge 2024 Food Pairing Suggestion:Â Harissa Lamb Koftas with Roasted Aubergine and Herby Yoghurt
Did you know?
The name Kloof Street comes from the Cape Town street where Chris and Andrea Mullineux lived when they first started making their own wines. In the early days they rented both vineyards and cellar space, and their liquor licence was registered to their home address – something Chris has jokingly described as effectively operating from their garage.
