Kloof Street Swartland Rouge is exactly the kind of red that has helped make South Africa’s New Wave so exciting: vibrant, savoury and full of character without relying on excessive ripeness or heavy oak. Syrah forms the backbone, bringing dark berries, pepper and structure, while Grenache contributes juicy red fruit and Cinsault adds perfume and lift. A generous proportion of whole-bunch fermentation introduces floral and herbal complexity, giving the wine an appealingly wild edge alongside its ripe black cherry fruit. Medium-bodied, fresh and wonderfully supple, this is a Rhône-inspired blend that feels unmistakably Swartland. It has enough structure for grilled meat, yet enough brightness to drink slightly chilled with charcuterie or Mediterranean-style dishes. The supplied South African offer particularly highlights its black cherry, pepper spice, perfume and vibrancy.

Mullineux Kloof Street Swartland Rouge, Producer

Mullineux was founded by husband-and-wife team Chris and Andrea Mullineux in 2007 and has become one of the most highly regarded names in modern South African wine. The estate has been named Platter’s Wine Guide Winery of the Year five times, while its philosophy centres on sustainable farming and allowing the distinctive soils of the Swartland to shape the wines.

Sustainability has become increasingly central to the estate. In 2025, Mullineux achieved full organic certification and became the first winery in South Africa to receive Regenerative Organic Certification. The Kloof Street range represents the more immediately approachable side of the estate, combining the same attention to vineyard quality with wines designed to offer generous fruit, freshness and excellent drinkability.

Mullineux Kloof Street Swartland Rouge, Terroir & Winemaking

The 2024 blend is 77% Syrah, 15% Grenache and 8% Cinsault, sourced from six sustainably farmed vineyard parcels across the Swartland, with vines ranging from around nine to 50 years old. Some parcels come from the stony shale and schist soils around Mullineux’s Roundstone farm at the foot of Kasteelberg, while another Syrah component grows on decomposed granite in the Paardeberg. These contrasting soils and sites help create a blend that combines ripe fruit with freshness, spice and savoury complexity.

Around 60% whole-bunch fermentation is used, enhancing fragrance, spice and freshness. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, with gentle punch-downs and just under four weeks of maceration. The wine then completes malolactic fermentation before spending approximately 11 months in seasoned French oak barrels, demi-muids and larger wooden vats. The older oak softens the wine and develops texture without introducing strong vanilla or toasted flavours.

Mullineux Kloof Street Swartland Rouge 2024, Tasting Notes

Deep ruby in colour with an expressive nose of black cherry, blackberry and ripe raspberry. Floral notes and crushed violets are joined by cracked black pepper, dried herbs and subtle savoury spice.

The palate is juicy and medium-bodied, with generous red and black berry fruit supported by rounded tannins and bright acidity. Cinsault brings fragrance, Grenache adds ripe fruit, while Syrah provides structure and the wine’s distinctive peppery backbone. The finish is fresh and lightly savoury, with lingering notes of black cherry, herbs and spice. The supplied offer describes the wine as particularly perfumed and vibrant, while the 2024 technical information emphasises its balance and rounded spicy finish.

Did you know?

The name Kloof Street comes from the Cape Town street where Chris and Andrea Mullineux lived when they first started making their own wines. In the early days they rented both vineyards and cellar space, and their liquor licence was registered to their home address – something Chris has jokingly described as effectively operating from their garage.
