Some of the most loved wines of Hungary are produced in the Tokaj wine region, and it is world-renowned as one of the top dessert wines in the world. The area is surrounded by picturesque vineyards and slopes, and underground labyrinths in a breathtaking landscape at the foot of the Zemplén Mountains. Wines are being produced here for more than 1000 years, and Patricius in particular is thought of as one of the royalty, called the “wine of kings, the king of wine” by Louis XIV.

The Kékessy family are dedicated winemakers with respect for traditions of the past and consideration for the future. Their winemaking roots go deep back to 18th century when their predecessors were running vineyards in Mátraalja and the Tokaj Wine Region. Today Dezs Kékessy and his daughter Katinka Kékessy own the Patricius Winery with eight historic first-growth vineyards that make up the 85-hectare estate in Bodrogkisfalud.

The family takes time to participate in planning the region’s cultural life in addition to producing wine. They take pride in educating the consumer that the wine is a product of place, cultivated by regional traditions, therefore it is crucial for the producers to protect and showcase the natural and cultural resources.

Patricius Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos, as the name suggests, is produced with Aszú method. The Aszú harvest is the most significant harvest in Tokaj, which normally starts at the end of October, when the grapes, which have now, ideally, developed the noble rot (or Botrytis cinerea), start to resemble raisins. The berries are hand-selected by skilled pickers, one by one, and the process is repeated multiple times. The grapes are then macerated, pressed, fermented, and stored in oak barrels (typically made from nearby woods). It is then aged for an extended period of time underground in special stone cellars, unique to the region.

This Tokaji has 212 grams per liter of residual sugar (although typically 6 Puttonyos would have somewhere between 150 and 180 grams). It is a lusciously sweet, but smooth wine with great acidity. The palate is weighty with notes of honey, dried apricot, lemon curd, mango, tangerine, and marmalade. The finish is incredibly long, with the exceptional deepness of exotic fruit. This is an absolute gem and a must-try for sweet wine lovers.

Food pairing suggestion: The classic – blue cheese. Amazing with dark chocolate and marmalade mouse, or why not try it with a savoury dish such as pasta with figs and caramelised bacon.

Did you know? According to legend, when the Turkish invasion was approaching in the early 17th century, Zsuzsanna Lórántffy (the wife of Prince György Rákóczi I and a significant landowner in the area), and her vineyard manager, László Máté Szepsi, decided to delay the harvest on the vast family vines. When it came time to pick the fruit, naturally the grapes had become shrivelled, botrytized raisins. But the winemakers decided to still use them, and that’s how Tokaj Aszú was created.

Exceptional, sweet and full bodied wine. Complex flavours. I could definitely taste the sweetness of the raisins. Highly recommend.
