Salt River is Sauvignon Blanc with a distinctly South African New Wave personality. Rather than pushing the grape towards overtly tropical fruit or intense grassy aromatics, Duncan Savage builds the wine around texture, minerality and coastal freshness. Orange blossom and citrus lead into salted lime, subtle stone fruit and a wonderfully savoury sea-spray character. Old-vine fruit gives the wine concentration, while fermentation in stainless steel, concrete and older barrels creates considerably more texture than you might expect from Sauvignon Blanc. The result is bright and refreshing, but also layered and quietly complex – a brilliant choice for anyone who enjoys mineral Sauvignon styles such as Sancerre but wants something with a little more generosity and individuality. The supplied 2026 offer describes it simply and rather accurately as a wine that “consistently overdelivers”.

Savage Wines Salt River Stellenbosch Sauvignon Blanc, Producer

Savage Wines is the personal project of Duncan Savage, one of the key figures associated with South Africa’s modern generation of site-focused winemakers. Before establishing his own label, Duncan spent 14 years at Cape Point Vineyards, where he developed particular expertise in producing precise, saline Sauvignon Blanc from coastal vineyards. Over the following 15 years he built a reputation for pure, age-worthy wines that combine carefully chosen vineyard sites with restrained winemaking.

Savage now works from an urban winery in Salt River, Cape Town: the neighbourhood that gives this wine its name. His approach is based on sourcing distinctive vineyards rather than being tied to one estate, with a particular interest in coastal and high-elevation sites. The resulting wines tend to favour freshness, texture and site expression over overt winemaking character.

Savage Wines Salt River Stellenbosch Sauvignon Blanc, Terroir & Winemaking

For the 2026 release, Salt River draws on old bush-vine Sauvignon Blanc from the Bottelary Hills together with fruit from coastal vineyard sites. The vineyards are rooted in decomposed granite, a soil type particularly associated with some of Stellenbosch’s most characterful wines. The combination of mature vines, free-draining granite soils and maritime influence contributes concentration while retaining the freshness and saline quality that has become a hallmark of the wine.

Savage Wines Salt River Stellenbosch Sauvignon Blanc 2026, Tasting Notes

Pale lemon in colour, with a lifted and elegant nose of orange blossom, salted lime and fresh citrus peel. Notes of grapefruit, white peach and subtle green herbs emerge alongside a distinctive sea-spray and crushed-stone character.

The palate is energetic and precise, combining citrus and gently ripe stone fruit with mouth-watering acidity. There is considerably more texture through the middle than in a straightforward Sauvignon Blanc, while a pithy, mineral grip adds definition. Salty lime and subtle floral notes carry into a long, dry and distinctly saline finish. The 2026 offer particularly highlights orange blossom, salted lime and sea spray as the defining characteristics of the wine.
