Taylor’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port, Producer
Taylor’s is one of the oldest and most respected Port houses, established in 1692 and still family-owned today. Widely regarded as the benchmark for aged tawnies, Taylor’s specialises in long-matured Ports made from the finest fruit grown in the steep, schist slopes of the Douro Valley. Their cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia are legendary: cool, dark, and filled with casks slowly transforming young ruby port into deep, amber-gold elegance. Taylor’s 20 Year Old Tawny is the house’s signature expression, blended from carefully selected casks that have each spent about two decades ageing in seasoned oak. It’s a masterclass in patience, precision and the quiet magic of oxidative ageing.
Taylor’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port, Terroir & Winemaking
The grapes come from Taylor’s best quintas in the Douro, where ancient vines rooted in poor schist soils produce intensely concentrated fruit. After fermentation, the young port is drawn off the skins, fortified and transferred to small oak casks for long, slow ageing. Over twenty years, the wine gradually shifts from deep ruby to golden amber as it oxidises, developing notes of dried fruit, nuts, caramel and warm spice. Master blenders then taste through hundreds of casks, crafting a final blend that balances freshness with maturity. The result is a tawny port that combines depth, finesse and seamless integration: the perfect midpoint between youthful fruit and old-vine wisdom.
Taylor’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port, Tasting Notes
Taylor’s 20 Year Old Tawny pours a glowing amber-mahogany colour. The nose is rich and complex: roasted almonds, caramelised orange peel, fig, toffee, cinnamon and hints of dried apricot. On the palate, it is silky and beautifully layered, combining mellow oak, toasted nuts, honey, butterscotch and delicate spice. A refreshing acidity keeps the sweetness in perfect balance, leading to a long, elegant finish of warm wood, hazelnut praline and dried fruit. Luxurious, refined and endlessly comforting.
Food Pairing Suggestion
Perfect with crème brûlée, almond tart, aged Gouda, salted pecans, dried fruits or simply on its own as an after-dinner contemplation.
