Terre Grec Assyrtiko offers a wonderfully approachable introduction to one of Greece’s most distinctive white grapes. While Assyrtiko is most famously associated with the volcanic island of Santorini, this expression comes from the Greek mainland, where the cooler influence of the Pindos Mountains helps retain the grape’s trademark freshness. Lime, citrus and crunchy green fruit are joined by passion fruit and subtle orange-leaf notes, while the palate remains dry, zesty and distinctly mineral. There is no oak to disguise the fruit, giving the wine an energetic, clean-cut character that feels immediately refreshing. Compared with some of the more austere examples of Assyrtiko, Terre Grec is particularly welcoming – still crisp and mineral, but with a little more aromatic fruit and softness through the middle.
Theopetra Estate Terre Grec Assyrtiko, Producer
Theopetra Estate was created by the Tsililis family in 1996, close to the dramatic Meteora landscape in Thessaly. The family’s aim was to revive the area’s historic vineyard culture following the devastation caused by phylloxera during the early twentieth century. Their 15-hectare estate vineyard surrounds the prehistoric Cave of Theopetra, an archaeological site where evidence of ancient human settlement – including grape seeds – demonstrates just how long vines and people have coexisted in this part of Greece.
The Tsililis family combines modern winemaking technology with a strong interest in Greek varieties and environmentally conscious viticulture. Although the estate itself is based near Meteora, the Terre Grec range also draws on carefully selected vineyards elsewhere in Thessaly, allowing the family to explore the character of varieties such as Assyrtiko in different mainland conditions.
Theopetra Estate Terre Grec Assyrtiko, Terroir & Winemaking
The fruit comes from PGI Tyrnavos, in the Larissa district of Thessaly. The vineyards sit at approximately 260 metres above sea level in a largely continental climate. Winters are cold and relatively wet, while summers are sunny, hot and dry. Cooling influences from the Pindos Mountains and nearby Pineios River, together with pronounced differences between daytime and night-time temperatures, help preserve natural acidity while allowing the grapes to develop concentrated aromas.
The soils combine sandy clay and limestone over a slate subsoil, providing good drainage and contributing to the wine’s fresh, mineral character. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness.
Before pressing, the fruit receives around six hours of pre-fermentation skin contact, helping extract additional aromatic character. Gentle pneumatic pressing is followed by fermentation with selected yeasts in stainless-steel tanks at cool temperatures of approximately 15–17°C. No oak is used, keeping the focus firmly on Assyrtiko’s citrus fruit, freshness and minerality.
Theopetra Estate Terre Grec Assyrtiko, Tasting Notes
Pale lemon in colour with youthful green reflections. The nose is vibrant and expressive, opening with lime, lemon zest and crisp green apple before revealing passion fruit, peach and subtle orange-leaf aromas.
The palate is dry, lively and mouth-watering, with citrus and crunchy orchard fruit balanced by naturally bright acidity. There is enough ripe fruit through the middle to soften Assyrtiko’s naturally firm structure, while a fine stony quality brings definition. Lime and lemon peel return on the finish, joined by subtle herbs and persistent mineral freshness. Current releases are particularly noted for their lime, passion fruit, orange leaf and long mineral finish.

Did you know?
Assyrtiko has a reputation for being intensely mineral, high in acidity and sometimes quite serious, but Terre Grec shows a much more immediately approachable side of the grape.
