Vachnadziani Saperavi is a brilliant introduction to Georgia’s most important red grape, offering the depth and colour Saperavi is famous for without becoming excessively heavy or tannic. Wild berries, ripe plum and black cherry are joined by blackcurrant, lavender and subtle tea-like notes, while a warming thread of spice runs through the palate. Despite its deeply coloured appearance, the wine is surprisingly supple, with soft tannins and Saperavi’s naturally vibrant acidity keeping the ripe fruit fresh and energetic. This is a more immediate, fruit-led expression of the variety rather than a heavily oaked or traditional qvevri style, making it particularly approachable for anyone discovering Georgian wine for the first time.
Vachnadziani Saperavi White Label, Producer
Vachnadziani is one of Georgia’s historic wineries, established in 1953 in the village of Vachnadziani in Gurjaani Municipality, at the heart of Kakheti. The winery itself occupies a site with a much longer agricultural history: during the nineteenth century the land belonged to Georgian nobleman Levan Jandieri before being taken into state ownership during the Soviet period.
Following years of decline during the Soviet era, considerable investment was made in both the vineyards and winery, including modern Italian winemaking equipment. Today, Vachnadziani works with an extensive range of Georgian varieties and vineyard holdings across both eastern and western Georgia, while Kakheti remains central to its identity.
Vachnadziani Saperavi White Label, Terroir & Winemaking
The fruit comes from Kakheti in eastern Georgia, the country’s most important wine-growing region and the historic heartland of Saperavi. Warm, sunny summers allow the grapes to achieve deep colour and ripe dark-fruit flavours, while the variety’s naturally high acidity helps preserve freshness even in generous vintages.
For this fresher expression, the grapes are harvested and fermented in stainless steel, keeping the emphasis on bright primary fruit rather than oak or oxidative character. Unlike some traditional Georgian reds, this is not primarily about extended qvevri ageing or heavy extraction. The result is a smoother, more immediately approachable style of Saperavi, with wild berry and plum fruit supported by soft tannins and fresh acidity.
Vachnadziani Saperavi White Label, Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in colour, with the almost inky intensity typical of Saperavi. The nose opens with wild blackberry, ripe red plum and black cherry, followed by cassis, lavender and subtle black-tea aromas.
The palate is generous but smooth, with juicy berry fruit and plum supported by soft tannins and characteristic refreshing acidity. Gentle pepper and warming spice appear towards the finish, alongside savoury hints of tea and dried herbs. Despite its depth of colour, the wine remains remarkably accessible, finishing fresh, spicy and satisfyingly fruit-driven.

Did you know?
Saperavi is a rare teinturier grape, meaning that not only its skin but also its flesh contains red pigment. Most red grapes actually have pale flesh, with the colour of the wine coming almost entirely from contact with the skins.
