Vitese Grillo: Thirst-Quenching Organic Sicilian White
Vitese Grillo is a thirst-quenching, organic white from Sicily, with layers of pear, melon and orange blossom. It is proof that Sicily makes some of Italy’s best-value dry white wines, and a brilliant alternative to everyday Pinot Grigio.
It is made by Colomba Bianca, founded in 1970 and now Sicily’s largest grower cooperative. It is also one of Italy’s biggest producers of organic wine, with more than 1,800 hectares farmed organically.
Grillo is one of Sicily’s most important native white grapes, loving the island’s sunshine and sea breezes. For Vitese, the organic grapes are hand-harvested, softly pressed and cool-fermented, then aged for about four months in stainless steel, with no oak, to keep the fruit fresh and bright.
Expect ripe melon, pear, green apple and yellow peach, with citrus, orange blossom and a touch of white pepper. The palate is fresh and gently textured, with juicy stone fruit, lemon-lime brightness and a lightly saline finish.
Vitese Grillo Food Pairing Suggestion:
Lovely with grilled prawns, seafood pasta, fritto misto, lemon roast chicken or a Sicilian caponata. It is also great with salty nibbles as an aperitif.
