Boekenhoutskloof, founded in 1776, is situated in the farthest corner of the picturesque Franschhoek valley. The farm’s name translates to “ravine of the Boekenhout” (pronounced Book-n-Howed), with Boekenhout referring to a native Cape Beech tree highly valued for furniture making.
In 1993, the farm and homestead were purchased and restored, initiating a new vineyard planting program. This program now features Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon, and Viognier.
Most of the grapes for this white blend come from the Swartland, and the wine reflects this origin, over- delivering in every sense. The Viognier brings a rich, ripe fruitiness to the nose with alluring peach melba aromas. The Chenin Blanc offers acidity for balance and freshness, with layered fruitiness on the mid- palate. Grenache Blanc is always included in the blend for its gentle yellow plum notes and slightly zesty character, adding elegance. Blending these three varieties is easy when the components deliver such opulence and abundant flavours.
The nose is lively and inviting, offering attractive aromas of yellow apple, ripe lemons, greengage, and lemon verbena, with gentle hints of clove, nutmeg, and ginger adding complexity. The slight spicy notes and citrus character from the nose carry through to the palate, revealing flavours of Cape gooseberry, white peach, fresh pineapple, and a hint of lemon curd. The mid-palate is smooth, round, and fleshy, yet also very focused. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with integrated acidity and a subtle touch of oak contributing to its excellent balance. Lemongrass and angelica linger on the fresh finish.
Food pairing suggestion: Chicken tagine.
Did you know? When the farm was established, the Franschhoek valley was much wilder than it is today, evidenced by the wolf trap the winemakers once discovered. Although no wolves have ever been found, the mountains remain home to indigenous animals, including the majestic leopard. This wine was created to honour the mysteries and legends of those bygone days.
