AA Badenhorst Family Wines are cultivated, produced, and aged on Kalmoesfontein farm in South Africa’s Swartland appellation. The estate encompasses 180 hectares of old bushvines in the Siebritskloof region of the Paardeberg mountain.
The farm is owned by the energetic and charismatic cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst, who come from Constantia. Their grandfather managed Groot Constantia for 46 years, where their fathers were born and worked together during a time when people enjoyed fresh vegetables, Hanepoot grapes, and Cinsault, with fewer traffic lights and a noticeable hippie presence. Together, Hein and Adi have revived a long-neglected cellar on the farm, last used in the 1930s, to produce natural wines in the traditional way.
At Kalmoesfontein, the approach is back to basics, utilizing traditional winemaking equipment and old cement kuipe. “We make wines with immense character. We use what we can afford, striving to create the best wines possible while enjoying great experiences. I want to create something that involves interaction from my family,” says the winemaker Adi.
The Secateurs Chenin Blanc is a rich and concentrated wine crafted from very old, un-irrigated vines, farmed as organically as possible. It features flavours of ripe apples and honey, with a creamy texture that adds richness and weight while maintaining the lively, zippy tang of Chenin Blanc’s acid backbone.
Food pairing suggestion: Fish pie.
